A Puck, a Truck & the Rest of the Story

Cranbrook, BC… It hardly seems that just over a week ago that so much excitement would take place all because of a chance to win a beautiful Ford F-150 at a Kootenay ICE game compliments of Denham Ford and its support of the A Clear View – digital mammography campaign.

When Cranbrook resident Marion Dixon stepped out onto the ice surface between the 2nd and 3rd periods she remembers being nervous about how to hold a hockey stick never mind trying to shoot a puck. When her fellow contestant made the attempt and missed, Marion decided give it her best try. Just imagine how difficult it is to hit a hole no bigger than 3 ½ inches wide and high from two blue lines away… almost impossible.

It is now a week later and you may have heard or seen the story of the woman who did the impossible. Marion quite simply hit the puck and watched as it slid its way slowly down and through that small opening and became the owner of a new Ford truck. An incredible feat to say the least but this is the rest of the story.

Brayden Denham shared with East Kootenay Foundation for Health the reason why he is passionate about being involved with the fundraising effort to bring a digital stereotactic mammography unit to the East Kootenay Regional Hospital is that his grandmother had breast cancer. His way of giving back was for his company to offer a truck as a charitable fundraiser for the East Kootenay Foundation for Health. The public was encouraged to make a donation to the A Clear View campaign (over $2,200 raised) and whether you did or didn’t you received a ticket for a chance to come to center ice.

Before Marion Dixon arrived at the game she had already planned to make her donation. You see, Marion is herself a breast cancer survivor, a strong proponent of the digital stereotactic mammography campaign. Twenty-two months ago, Marion’s world was changed when she learned of her breast cancer diagnosis. “I know very well what this piece of equipment will mean to the East Kootenays; it will and can change lives. I am grateful to have won a truck but even more so to see people, businesses and organizations getting behind the foundation,” says Marion.

The night out at the hockey game also highlighted a silent auction of current NHL/AHL jerseys of former Kootenay ICE alumni Fraser, McNabb, Eakin, Martin and King. By the time the Shoot for the Truck donations and cheering for Marion Dixon was complete and the silent auction over, a total of just over $5,400 in additional funding was received for the A Clear View campaign.

So it goes a puck, a truck and a story of hope, belief and challenging the impossible. East Kootenay Foundation for Health is grateful for the support of Denham Ford and the Kootenay ICE Hockey Club in our drive to bring a $1 million digital stereotactic mammography unit to the regional hospital. To date pledges and donations sit at approximately $750,000. If you wish to make a donation, please visit www.aclearview.ca.
