Details: Thirty-two members of the Cranbrook Colonels Hockey Club recently held their annual golf getaway at the beautiful Indian Springs Golf Course in Palm Springs.

What the members didn’t know is that one of their burly hockey playing buddies, Karl McConnell also had a plan to not just have a fun golf vacation but to make a difference for two charities that are focused on cancer initiatives.

Over the past several months Karl had been growing out his hair so that he could donate it to the Locks of Love a non-profit organization that provides hairpieces to disadvantaged children in the Canada and US. His other charity of choice was the East Kootenay Foundation for Health to support its digital mammography campaign.

When Chris Callen learned of the plan he quickly went to work and encouraged all of the Colonels to make a donation to Karl as he had his hair cut. Thanks to the Indian Springs Golf Course they sourced a local hairdresser who donated her time and skills and the course provided a “cutting room” to show their support. In the end the players raised a total of $1,000 for EKFH and a cooler Karl (the Palm Springs golfing weather was in the high 90’s) achieved his goal.

This is another story of a personal commitment in the fight against cancer, East Kootenay Foundation for Health is grateful to Karl and all of the Cranbrook Colonels for their continued support of its mission to provide funding to assist the East Kootenay Regional Hospital and other community health care facilities in meeting the needs of the region.
